FAQ

Below are answers to common questions about the Teachers’ Institute Conference on Writing. . If you have other questions, please direct them to Wanda Martin by calling 505 277 5027 or via e-mail to wmartin@unm.edu.

What does it cost to attend the Teachers’ Institute Conference on Writing?

There is no program fee for New Mexico teachers. Teachers from outside New Mexico will be accommodated on a space-available basis for a registration fee of $350.

In addition to program materials, the Institute will provide lunch on both conference days and a reception buffet on Monday evening.

Why is the Conference not in Taos this year?

We had to find another venue because the Taos Summer Writers Conference has been extended to nine days this year, and the Sagebrush Inn was not able to accommodate us.

Why is the Conference on Sunday and Monday this year instead of Saturday and Sunday?

Los Poblanos Inn and Cultural Center was not able to offer us a Saturday date this year. We hope this calendar will work for participants. We’ll ask for feedback on the schedule before booking the 2009 Conference.

I’m coming from a long distance. Can I extend my stay at Hotel Albuquerque?

Due to budget constraints and the change of venue, the Teachers’ Institute can provide lodging only for participants who live outside the Albuquerque metropolitan area. Lodging will be at our expense on Sunday and Monday nights so all participants can stay for the reception and reading. If you wish to extend your stay, please contact the Hotel Albuquerque directly.

Will I have access to computers and printers while I’m at the Conference?

Yes. We will provide access during the day to a small room with about six computers and a shared laser printer. Participants who bring their own laptop computers will be able to print documents using disks or flash drives. Supported word-processing software will include recent versions of Microsoft Word (for Mac and PC), AppleWorks (Mac), and Corel Wordperfect (PC).

What is the deadline to register for the Conference?

Registration will remain open until all workshops are full. For the best chance of getting your first choice workshop, register online and send in your refundable deposit by May 1.

Why do I need to list workshop preferences?

Space is limited to 48 participants, twelve in each workshop. Insofar as possible, we will place you in your first choice.

When will I be notified of my workshop placement?

We will notify participants of their placements on May 20.

How should I prepare for the Conference?

We’ll send you a confirmation packet with information from your workshop leader about the planned activities and any advance reading. You should plan to spend some time on the advance reading before you arrive on July 20.
