American Studies provides excellent training for a wide range of careers and vocations. It gives students interested in government, community, or social work a sound background for professional training, and the major is especially appropriate for pre-law students. Graduates oriented toward the communication arts - journalism, television, public relations, and advertising - find that an American Studies background provides the kind of knowledge about American society and issues required in those fields. American Studies is also a good background for students interested in business careers, particularly in a time when many professions and careers require flexibility and sensitivity to social, cultural and political issues and problems. Students majoring in American Studies assume considerable responsibility forcreating their own courses of study, while working closely with a faculty advisorwho helps ensure that they meet departmental requirements. Students are encouragedto work in a wide variety of subjects and disciplines and to develop individualand innovative courses of study. American Studies majorscomplete a minimum of 36 semester hours, including a three-hour introductorycourse and a three-hour senior seminar. Because of the interdisciplinary natureof the American Studies major, students may count approved courses in other departmentstoward their major requirements. An undergraduate advisoris available to answer questions about the American Studies major and minor degrees. For more information: UNM Registrar's Course Catalog |
