Students who wish to transfer into the College of Arts
and Sciences must meet the following requirements:
- Earned 26 hours of credit. At least 23 of those hours must be
acceptable hours toward graduation in the College of A&S.
- An earned GPA of 2.0 or higher.
- Satisfaction of the English competence requirement.
This may be accomplished by:
· completing English 102 with a C or higher;
· scoring 29 or higher on the English section of the
Enhanced ACT;
· scoring 650 or higher on the verbal section of the
SAT;
· credit for English 102 through CEEB advanced placement;
or
· completion of the writing proficiency portfolio requirement
available through the Department of English.
Upon transferring into the College of A&S, students must fill
out a “Declaration of Major” form. This form designates the student’s
major and minor (or second major). Students must take the form to the major department
(both departments in the case of double majors) to be signed by the undergraduate
advisor in the major department.
For example, Biology majors take the form to the Biology Department for the Biology
advisor’s signature. When the form has been signed by the departmental advisor
in your major field(s), turn in the form to the A&S Advisement Center.
Here are some frequently asked questions about transferring
into the College of A&S:
- What if I am now taking English 102, but I will complete
it at the end of the semester. Can I transfer into A&S before I get my grade?
No. Students must have a recorded grade of C or better in English 102 before using
English 102 to satisfy the English competence requirement and entering A&S.
The College of Arts and Sciences will not accept students who lack demonstrated
English competence.
- I am a non-degree student. Should I apply to A&S?
No. You should go to the Office of Admissions and submit an application as a non-degree
student.
- What is the writing proficiency portfolio and how do
I know whether it is a better choice for me than taking English 102?
The Department of English has written a helpful brochure that explains how the
writing proficiency portfolio works. Click
here to read the brochure. If you have questions, visit the Department of
English and speak with the Undergraduate Advisor or the Director of the Writing
Proficiency Portfolio Project.
- I met with A&S advisors at Lobo Orientation, but
I’m still a student in University College. Should I meet with an advisor
at University College or at the A&S Advisement Center?
When you are ready to transfer into A&S, you should come to the A&S Advisement
Center. Until then, your University College advisors, the undergraduate advisor
in your intended major, and the A&S E-Advisor can assist you with your advisement
questions. Of course, if you do not understand an A&S requirement, you are
welcome to visit the A&S Advisement Center as well.
- What do I need to bring with me when I visit the A&S
Advisement Center?
Always bring photo identification, a copy of your unofficial transcript (available
from the Records Office), transfer evaluations if you have transfer work from
another university, and a copy of any advisement materials you have been given
by any UNM advisors.
