Paul Edmunds
Academic Manager
MA in Linguistics
BA in English and Spanish; minor in Biology

Paul started at CELAC as an instructor in the Fall semester of 2000. After earning his M.A. in Linguistics in 2003, he became the Assistant to the Academic Director and worked in that role, while continuing to teach, through 2007. In 2008, Paul became the Academic Manager of CELAC. Before working at CELAC, Paul also worked at a variety of English programs in Mérida, Venezuela and was a volunteer ESL teacher in Minneapolis, MN while finishing his undergraduate degree in English and Spanish. He has also taught classes in the Linguistics and Spanish departments at UNM. He is currently working on completing a Ph.D. program in Linguistics with a concentration in Speech & Hearing Sciences.

 

Tatiana Minot
Program Manager
BA in International Relations, James Madison College at Michigan State
University

Tatiana began her career in international education working at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland. She also lived in Barcelona, Spain and Lahore, Pakistan; and she has traveled to many other
countries. She taught ESOL at Blackhawk Community College in Moline,
Illinois for three years. Tatiana finally settled down in Albuquerque
to raise her two children, and she began working at the UNM Office of
International Programs and Studies and CELAC in 1995. At Blackhawk
College and UNM, she has organized international festivals showing her
enthusiasm to share with others the traditions, food, and music of many
cultures around the world. Tatiana speaks German, French, Russian, and
some Spanish. She enjoys many outdoor activities such as skiing,
mountain biking, hiking, volleyball, tennis, and soccer. Currently,
she is taking classes toward an MA in education at UNM.

Susan Brumbaugh
Instructor
BA in Spanish and TESOL, Illinois State University

After graduating from Illinois State University, Susan began teaching at the ISU English Language Institute. Her study of teaching English to speakers of other languages and her work at the English Language Institute deepened Susan’s interest in both the profession of TESOL and the academic discipline of linguistics. At the University of New Mexico, she is able to incorporate both into her life. During the Fall 2007 semester, Susan started working towards her MA in Linguistics and teaching classes at CELAC. Her areas of interest include second language acquisition, language change, morphology, and syntax. In her free time Susan enjoys sewing, playing soccer, and cooking.

Izabella Kovarzina

MA in TESOL, University of New Mexico


Since moving to the United States in 1999, Izabella Kovarzina has had both a personal and a professional interest in the process of second language acquisition. She began her career working as a production assistant at KUNM public radio, and later as a professional intern at Tireman Multicultural Library. During that time, she earned an MA with distinction in the field of bilingual education and TESOL. Currently she is working on her doctorate in bilingual education, and has a strong interest in teaching second language writing. She held several graduate assistantships at the College of Education, and won several awards including the Executive Women International Scholarship and the Carl P. Dunifon & Erma Whitmore Dunifon Scholarship. Izabella has been a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society since Spring 2002. In addition to her studies, she enjoys following current research in education and participating in international conferences. Izabella has been tutoring English at Central New Mexico Community College since Autumn 2006, and at the College of Education Graduate Student Writing Studio since Summer 2006. She has been an instructor at CELAC since Spring 2007.

James Owens

James began teaching ESL with Lutheran Family Services in Portland, Oregon in 1984; his students were youth and adults who were in the US on
refugee status from various areas of Southeast Asia. He taught high school in Portland for over 20 years in the areas of German language and
social studies at a school known and respected for its ethnic diversity. He also created a theater arts program at the school which endured as an extra-curricular program for eight years. Currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program in history at UNM, James also teaches introductory-level history courses. As an undergraduate, James lived in Cologne, Germanyto improve his knowledge of German. He understands the challenges andfrustrations of learning another language in a place other than home.

Radi Moustafa
Instructor
BA in TESOL, South Valley University, Egypt

Radi’s interest in learning and teaching languages started in his childhood when he first got exposed to foreigners in his native country,Egypt. He began learning English at an early age and has made it one ofhis favorite areas of study. After earning his BA, Radi taught English in Egypt at the middle school and university levels. In 2006, he was
awarded a grant from the Fulbright Commission to teach Arabic at the
University of New Mexico. Because of his belief that culture is a main
component of any language, he is doing his MA in comparative literature and cultural studies. He is going to start his Ph.D. in teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) in January 2009. His dedication to the study and teaching of English has allowed him to gain many opportunities, and in the future he hopes to contribute to positive changes in the educational system in his home country.

Joe Herrin
Instructor
BA in Liberal Arts, Indiana University

Joe has many years of experience teaching English as a foreign language in Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. He began his teaching career
in Bulgaria in 1993, where he taught English and American History tohigh school students. Since then, he has taught at private schools in
Indonesia and at binational centers in Panama and Nicaragua. Mostrecently, he conducted business English courses in Ukraine. Joe iscurrently pursuing an MA in Language, Literacy and SocioculturalStudies/TESOL from the University of New Mexico. Joe is a musician andsongwriter whose interests include travel, history, and screenwriting.
