Admission is based upon previous academic performance, professional background, career objectives, recommendations, and test scores.
Entrance Requirements – MSCE Program:
Grade Point Average (GPA): A minimum GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) over the last two undergraduate years in science, math, and engineering courses.
GRE General Exam Scores: A minimum combined score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections is required. An official score report is required, sent directly from the testing center.
Language Skills for International Students: International students must achieve a minimum score on the TOEFL of 550 on the paper exam, 213 on the computer exam, or 79-80 on the internet-based test; a score of 7.0 on the IELTS; or a minimum score of C on the CPE or CAE test.

Grade Point Average (GPA): An undergraduate baccalaureate degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) for courses in the major field of study over the last two undergraduate years.
GMAT Exam Scores: A minimum of 500 is required. An official score report is required, sent directly from the testing center.
Language Skills for International Students: International students must achieve a minimum score on the TOEFL of 550 on the paper exam, 213 on the computer exam, or 79-80 on the internet-based test; a score of 7.0 on the IELTS; or a minimum score of C on the CPE or CAE test.
Entrance Requirements – PhD Program:
Generally admission to the PhD program requires that the student has earned an appropriate M.S. degree and has demonstrated the potential for research. There should be a match between the student’s research interests and current departmental research activities.
Grade Point Average (GPA): A minimum GPA of 3.0 (or equivalent) in the bachelor’s degree and master’s degree.
GRE General Exam Scores: A minimum combined score of 1000 on the verbal and quantitative sections is required. An official score report is required, sent directly from the testing center.
Language Skills for International Students: International students must achieve a minimum score on the TOEFL of 550 on the paper exam, 213 on the computer exam, or 79-80 on the internet-based test; a score of 7.0 on the IELTS; or a minimum score of C on the CPE or CAE test.
Exceptional students may pursue a PhD without first earning an M.S. This is accomplished by enrolling in the M.S. program first, then changing to a PhD program after the student has demonstrated outstanding potential for graduate studies and research.
FOR ALL DEGREES, we require:
1) Three letters of recommendation (these forms may be used - look under Admission Forms)

Letter of intent that summarizes your qualifications, professional goals, and indicates the area of civil engineering which you want to pursue
MSCE Students Without Degrees in Civil Engineering:
If you have an accredited B.S. in a field other than civil engineering, additional coursework may be required, depending on your proposed area of study, prior to gaining admission to the department.
MCM Students Without Degrees in Civil or Construction:
All students are required to have minimum competencies in math, statistics, engineering economics, and construction fundamentals.
Procedures:
US Citizens and Permanent Residents should submit application materials to the Graduate Admissions Office. You can find instructions for the application process here . An online application provides faster service.
Deadlines for Graduate Admissions are:
Fall Semester July 15
Spring Semester November 10
Summer Term April 29
Applications received by Graduate Admissions after the deadline will be processed for the following semester. Please be sure to follow the deadlines and instructions carefully.
International Students should apply through the Office of International Admissions. Application forms, supporting credentials, and test scores must be received by the following deadlines:
Fall Semester March 1
Spring Semester August 1
Summer Term January 1
For all students:
An official copy of the appropriate GRE or GMAT test scores, three letters of recommendation, and letter of intent referenced above should be submitted directly to the department, not to Graduate Admissions or to International Admissions. You may also submit any additional information you feel may support your application, such as a resume or indication of professional registration.
You must follow the deadlines established by either Graduate Admissions or International Admissions for the departmental documents.
