  MASTERS DEGREE »

Entrance into the Master of Science in Civil Engineering (MSCE) degree assumes a solid background in civil engineering.  If you do not have a BSCE , you will be required to take certain undergraduate classes.  If you have a degree in another field of engineering, you may have to take some undergraduate classes.

Entrance into the Master’s in Construction Management (MCM) assumes a background in civil engineering, construction engineering, or construction engineering.  If you have do not have a bachelor’s degree in those areas, you will have to take a sequence of preparatory classes.

The department offers a MSCE in six concentrations and a MCM degree.

Master of Science in Civil Engineering
Concentration in Construction Engineering and Management
            Concentration in Environmental Engineering
Concentration in Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering
            Concentration in Geotechnical Engineering
            Concentration in Structural Engineering
Concentration in Transportation and Traffic Engineering

Master’s in Construction Management

For the MSCE degree, there are two options: Plan I (thesis) or Plan II (project or coursework only). Plan I requires 32 credits total - a minimum of 24 credits of coursework, 6 hours of thesis credit (CE 599), and 2 credits of our graduate seminar (CE 691). Plan II requires 35 credits total - a minimum of 33 hours of coursework, which may include up to 3 credits of project credit (CE 588), and 2 credits of our graduate seminar (CE 691).

For the MCM degree, the available option is Plan II - Project requiring 35 credits total as outlined in the above paragraph. Under certain circumstances, students showing exceptional research skills will be allowed to complete the Plan I - Thesis option.

All master’s students are required to pass a master’s examination.  The exam is taken once the student has completed all the required courses.  Plan I – Thesis students are examined on their thesis subject, Plan II – Project students are examined on their project subject, and Plan II – Coursework Only students are examined on all the coursework taken as a master’s degree student.
