Liquor law violations rise on campus

Arrests for on-campus liquor law violations are down, but violations
are not.
Reports from the UNM Police Department show liquor law violation
arrests in 2006 down by nearly two-thirds from 2005, when the
total was 82, and 2004, when there were 79 arrests.
The report shows 23 arrests for 2006 liquor law violations.
However, referrals, or campus disciplinary action without arrest,
for liquor law violations reached 301 in 2006. In 2005, 182
liquor law violation referrals marked a drop in over 100 offenses
from 2004’s count of 286 referrals.
In all three years most of the referrals for liquor law violations
occurred in campus residential areas.
The reports also show a rise in motor vehicle theft since 2004,
when 45 reports were made. In 2005, 63 motor vehicle thefts
were reported, a trend that continued in 2006 with 69 reports.
Burglary reports are also up from 33 in 2004 to 55 in 2006.
A single instance of reported on-campus arson in 2006 matches
the numbers for 2004’s arson report, a return from the
spike of five counts of arson reported to campus police in 2005.
All three years share a constant count of zero reports for homicides
and non-forcible sex offenses.
