2004 Outreach Plans
Nanoscience MST 2004 Course — The Nanoscience Course for the NMT Master of Science Teachers program will be presented at NMT, Socorro, during the second summer session. The course content is being reviewed based on the previous two courses and the Nano Workshop experiences.
Fall 2004 Workshop — We originally planned to have two workshops, one at San Juan College (SJC) in Farmington and one at the UNM Extension University in Gallup. However because of the need to provide follow-up and reinforcement for the earlier workshop and course graduates and limited funds, we likely will only hold the workshop at SJC, where we have very strong support from the college administration and Professor Eric miller. This will be an important workshop because it should attract many teachers who have a high percentage of Native American students.
External Grants — The $6,500 grant from PNM is too small to enable us to provide nano kits to each of the graduates of the MST Nano science courses and the Nano Workshops as originally planned We are studying how to provide kits, which will have the greatest impact at creating interest in science and engineering in middle and high school students across the State.
We are planning to go after additional external grants to support the EPSCoR Nanoscience Initiative Community Education Outreach Program.
Outreach Follow-up — We are in the planning stage of deciding how to provide an appropriate follow-up activity for the graduates of our Nano MST courses and workshops. The objective would be to provide the teachers reinforcement and new materials that they could take back to their schools. One idea is to have a workshop for graduates that will feature one central theme in depth to enable each participant to have a lesson plan for one activity, which they could readily incorporate into their science courses and would provide a hands-on experience for their students. As we develop this theme it will be posted on this page.
