Mission

To provide a focal point for materials science research and education at UNM and to develop new, interdisciplinary technologies to make the United States more competitive in ceramic science and engineering and to transfer these technologies to industry to foster the development of competitive, reproducible ceramic and polymer/ceramic composite materials for advanced, high performance systems.

Introduction

The UNM Center for Micro-Engineered Materials (CMEM), formerly a Center in the National Science Foundation, NSF, Industry/University Cooperative Research Center (IUCRC) program serves as a focal point for materials science research and education at UNM. The research performed by the CMEM faculty is highly leveraged because of close collaboration with research scientists from Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and the Sandia Center for Integrated Nanotechnology (CINT), The Center owns or has access to state-of-the-art facilities to synthesize and characterize a broad range of materials including a one-of-a-kind Small-Angle X-ray Scattering Center. The CMEM has close ties to the UNM/Rutgers Ceramic and Composite Materials Center, CCMC, a NSF I/UCRC. It also provides leadership for the State of New Mexico NSF EPSCoR initiative in nanotechnology and the development of a Ph.D. degree granting Nanomaterials and Microsystems graduate program.
