We’re Moving!

The ESS department will soon move their offices into the new Centennial Engineering Center which is being built on the West end of Redondo Blvd. Currently ESS is housed in three different locations in the School of Engineering (Tapy Hall, the Electrical/Computer Engineering and the Mechanical Engineering buildings).

The new building will include several new features such as a large student study area, a large computer lab, two large meeting rooms and the best part is, each ESS program will be together under one roof!

Recent ESS Event

ESS recently held their annual End-of-the-Year & Graduate Recognition Banquet honoring their 2007-2008 graduates, May 6, 2008.

During the event, Dr. Chuck Fledderman, Associate Dean of the School of Engineering gave the Opening Remarks and Michael Sheyka, SOE graduate student in Civil Engineering gave the keynote address.

Over 50 students were recognized within each ESS Program constituent but the highlights of this year’s event were the awards given to students for outstanding freshmen, outstanding sophomore and outstanding leadership.

ASEE Regional Conference Held in Albuquerque

ESS recently participated in the 2008 ASEE-Gulf Southwest Annual Conference, March 26-28, 2008 at the Albuquerque Mariott Hotel. UNM School of Engineering was the academic host of the event.

The conference showcased a variety of speakers, workshops and student paper presentations and welcomed many participants from around the world.

Dr. Tariq Khraishi, Professor of Mechanical Engineering at UNM was the conference chair and many of the ESS staff presented papers on a variety of engineering education topics.

ESS Welcomes Several High School Visits

Two New Mexico high schools recently brought large groups of students to visit UNM and tour the School of Engineering, Capital High School (in Santa Fe) and Manzano High School.

ESS arranged several department visits and presentations from School of Engineering faculty. During the visits students had a chance to observe numerous research projects and meet with the faculty researchers to ask questions and get an introduction to the types of careers that await engineering student graduates.

Students attended a presentation by Dr. Arup Maji, civil engineering professor and Chair of the Civil Engineering department. Dr. Maji discussed the many career opportunities students in civil engineering, construction engineering and construction management.

During the latter part of the SOE tour, students visited the Mechanical Engineering building and met with two other faculty members: Dr. Tariq Khraishi and Dr. John Russell. Students toured the Mechanical Testing Laboratory overseen by Dr. Khraishi whose research involves tensile testing of aluminum, the impact/toughness testing of steel, and research on pediatric halo fixation in a model skull for children with scoliosis.

The last visit of the SOE tour included a stop at the Lobo Motorsports lab overseen by faculty advisor Dr. John Russell and engineering students who are members of the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE). In the lab, visiting students had a chance to see the formula race car that mechanical engineering students are constructing as part of their senior design project. Students involved in this project learn about racecar engineering, the software required to design the car and manufacture the parts, test the car and prepare for national competition.
