DECIDING TO DROP A COURSE
Important issues to consider before dropping a class:
• What is the cause of the poor academic performance?
• Can it be improved?
• Will dropping the class impact a scholarship or financial award?
• Is the class required?
• When can the class be re-taken?
• Determine the timeline and appropriate course of action
• Talk to the ESS academic advisor about options
• Take action to meet deadlines
HOW AND WHEN TO DROP A COURSE
Students may drop courses during the semester; however, to drop a course without a grade, classes must be dropped prior to the deadline (see chart below). To drop a course after the deadline, meet with the professor before making an appointment to see the Associate Dean for permission to drop.
REPEATING A COURSE AND REPLACEMENT OF GRADE
Repeating a course, but credit for the course will be given only once (this could impact scholarships as well). All attempts and all grades are computed in the grade point average unless a petition is made to have the grade replaced. A grade replacement may be applied to only 12 hours of repeated course work.
