Here is what's happening at UNM

Prospective Students

Prospective students are those students interest in pursuing an Engineering or Computer Science Degree but they haven’t quite made it into the School of Engineering.

FOUR TYPES OF PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

1) Current High School Students

Those in the process of choosing a college or university. They coordinate campus visits with the Recruitment Office and visit Engineering Student Services to get specific information on UNM’s Engineering and Computer Science Programs and requirements for admission.

2) Freshmen

These are student who are just beginning their academic career at UNM. If they meet the admission requirements, they are admitted directly into the School of Engineering as a Pre Major (general engineering) and begin working on their required courses for admission to their degree granting department. Typically, if a beginning Freshman is eligible to take Math 123 (Trigonometry) AND Math 150 (Pre-calculus) based on their ACT or SAT math scores, they are eligible for direct admission to the Engineering Student Services premajor program.

3) Transfer Students from other institutions

Those students who have earned hours at other accredited academic institutions. These students must typically have there transfer coursework evaluated to see what courses will be counted as direct equivalents at UNM. Transfer students may be admitted to University College, the Pre Major program or directly into their chosen department depending on the number and type of credit hours that are accepted. While the UNM Admissions Office determines which classes transfer, we are always willing to provide additional guidance and assistance.

4) These are current UNM students (those planning to transition into an engineering degree program). A large percentage of students need to complete some pre-requisites (usually in math) before they are eligible for the pre-major program. Our office wants to work with them and provides the same high quality, engineering specific advisement that we provide beginning engineering students with:

-College Specific Orientation
-Mandatory Engineering Advisement
-Advisement, Tracking, Contact w/ SOE
-Comprehensive Degree Progress Tracking
-Immersion into Engineering: Study Groups, faculty contacts, department research
-Co-ops and social events designed to acclimate them into the SOE.

New freshmen who are eligible to take Math 123 (Trigonometry) & Math 150 (Pre-calculus) are generally eligible for admission to the Pre Major Program.

IF YOU'RE A FRESHMAN STUDENT, BUT NOT QUITE ELIGIBLE FOR MATH 123 AND 150:

Don’t worry; we still want to see you! If you’re planning on Engineering or Computer Science, WE WANT YOU TO VISIT US FOR YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISEMENT

Let our award winning advisement team help you Navigate through to success in engineering or Computer Science!

Please note: At UNM, Math Placement is mandatory, and based on ACT or SAT scores. The UNM Department of Mathematics and Statistics sets the criteria for course placement. In those instances where a student has taken more than one test, they will be placed into their Math class based on their most recent test scores, which may not necessarily be their highest.
