Greens in Iraq Project

Tabling: Nov 3, 4, 5, 8, 11, 12 at 11am-2pm SUB.

Current Focus:

To send a Holiday Care Package to an Army medical unit in Iraq which has a registered Green member in order to show support for the Americans who are deployed and to promote awareness of the Green Party to military members. Additionally the soldiers are collecting school supplies for local Iraqi children in primary and middle school.

Action:

  • discuss the project with the UNM College Greens (approved)
  • contact the Green soldier to ensure that a package is acceptable, obtain mailing address (approved and in progress)
  • obtain mailing information in order to send package to Iraq (in progress)
  • contact other Green groups to establish promotion and inclusion in project (in progress)
  • Prior to Nov 11: emails, flyers, to promote event (in progress)
  • tabling daily in SUB with box (need volunteers--contact Bobbi Page)

  • Nov 11 (Veteran's Day): 9am-3pm table at the SUB.

2004.11.12 We had a good week for donations! We especially thank our generous donor on Friday, November 12th in helping us send a nice package to the children. Thank you to all of those who gave. I will be buying items this weekend and packing up on Sunday. If you have any more donations, please email unmgreens at bobbipage.net.

2004.11.13 I have purchased nearly all of the items and have been packaging them up--scheduled ship date Monday, November 15.

2004.11.14 Well, almost everything is boxed up and just needs customs forms to go. I have to buy one more box for the soldiers. There are nine boxes total. Special thanks for extra goodies on the last day of packing Terry Mulcahy (school supplies) and Michal Mudd (school supplies and goodies for soldiers). The first run numbers are below (I may have missed an item or two).

Thanks again to all who made this possible with their time and/or money. Thanks to the men and women of our military, may they come home soon.
