PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

Full-time lecturer in journalism at the University of New Mexico, 2001–present.

Past experience in chronological order:

• Licensed commercial real estate broker specializing in the sale and acquisition of weekly newspapers in Iowa through my brokerage firm, Newspaper Associates, 1997–2002. Discontinued license to move to New Mexico and teach.

• Part-time instructor in journalism at the University of New Mexico; part-time instructor in journalism at the University of Iowa; adjunct in journalism at Kirkwood Community College; media consultant at Cornell College, 1999–2001. Resigned to move to New Mexico.

• Publisher/owner of a group of Iowa weeklies, including The SUN newspaper and The SUNlight shopping guide in Mount Vernon. Responsible for all operations of the corporation; editor of all publications, 1985–1997. Sold the business after 12 years to pursue master’s degree in journalism and to teach.

• Chief of Staff for U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee. Spokesman for congressman and responsible for management of staff and operations in Washington, D.C. office; press relations; political liaison, 1977–1985. Resigned to buy newspaper in Mount Vernon.

• Press secretary for successful U.S. Senate campaign of Donald W. Riegle Jr. in Michigan, 1976.

• Reporter and assistant on the city desk for The Flint Journal, a daily newspaper in Flint, Mich., 1965–1976, with the exception of three periods listed below:

1970 spring semester: Graduate School, Marquette University.

1968–1969: U.S. Army.

1967: Editor of a weekly newspaper in Davison, Mich.

While attending college (1960–1964), I was a full-time summer reporter with two daily newspapers in Michigan (Jackson Citizen Patriot and the Albion Evening Recorder), and I worked part-time for the Associated Press in Milwaukee and for Marquette University’s News Bureau. Also, in 1970, I was a freelance writer for The Milwaukee Journal.

OTHER INTERESTS

Hiking, bicycling, fiction-writing. I was an ultralight aircraft pilot for eight years. My wife, Beatrice, and I have been married for 39 years. We have two sons, a daughter-in-law and four grandchildren who all live in Southwest. In 2000-01 I was Iowa’s statewide coordinator for Monarch Watch, which studies the annual autumn migration of monarch butterflies through a national tagging program coordinated by the entomology program at the University of Kansas.
