¥ Licensed commercial real estate broker specializing in the
sale and acquisition of weekly newspapers in Iowa through my brokerage
firm, Newspaper Associates, 1997Ð2002. Discontinued license to move
to New Mexico and teach.
¥
Part-time instructor in
journalism at the University of New Mexico; part-time instructor in
journalism at the University of Iowa; adjunct in journalism at Kirkwood
Community College; media consultant at Cornell College, 1999Ð2001. Resigned
to move to New Mexico.
¥ Publisher/owner of a group of Iowa weeklies, including The
SUN newspaper
and The SUNlight
shopping guide in Mount Vernon. Responsible for all operations of the
corporation; editor of all publications, 1985Ð1997. Sold the business
after 12 years to pursue masterÕs degree in journalism and to teach.
¥ Chief of Staff for U.S. Rep. Dale E. Kildee. Spokesman for
congressman and responsible for management of staff and operations in

1967: Editor of a weekly newspaper in Davison, Mich.
While attending college (1960Ð1964), I was
a full-time summer reporter with two daily newspapers in Michigan (Jackson
Citizen Patriot
and the Albion Evening Recorder),
and I worked part-time for the Associated Press in Milwaukee and for
Marquette UniversityÕs News Bureau. Also, in 1970, I was a freelance
writer for The Milwaukee Journal.
OTHER INTERESTS
Hiking,
bicycling, fiction-writing. I was an ultralight aircraft pilot for eight
years. My wife, Beatrice, and I have been married for 39 years. We have
two sons, a daughter-in-law and four grandchildren who all live in Southwest.
In 2000-01 I was IowaÕs statewide coordinator for Monarch Watch, which
studies the annual autumn migration of monarch butterflies through a
national tagging program coordinated by the entomology program at the
University of Kansas.
