Spring 2008 Headlines

Four Honors Students are awarded the Clauve Outstanding Senior Award! The Clauve award is presented to seniors who have performed well academically while making significant contributions to the general welfare of the campus community. Matthew Barnes, Megan Fitzpatrick, Louis Jeantete and John Smeltzer were among the winners! Matt, Megan and John will also be graduating this Spring. We are sorry to see them leave the forum, but are certain they are headed for truly amazing and rewarding futures!
2007 Honors Alum' Christopher Prentice has won a Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship (one of 60 major awards)! Chris was also named the Walter and Adelheid Hohenstein Fellow for the Western Region. The Honors Program congratulates Chris and all of our esteemed alumni for their continued achievements, honors, and accomplishments!

Stephanie Moquin wins again! Steph was recently notifiied by the American Society for Microbiology that she has been awarded a 2008 ASM Undergraduate Research Fellowship. This is an elite opportunity for the best and the brightest rising young sicentists. Starting in June, Stephanie will participate in a 10-week research program aided with a generous stipend and travel award! Congratulations and keep up the hard work!

Benjamin Ediger and Stephanie Moquin, both University Honors Program students at the University of New Mexico, were recently awarded the prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Ediger and Moquin now join the ranks of 10 previous students from the University of New Mexico—nine of whom are Honors students—selected for this competitive honor since 1999.
Established in 1986 with the purpose of encouraging outstanding students to pursue careers in mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering, the Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for educational expenses. Over 1,000 applicants vied for the 2008-09 scholarship, and 321 students from across the nation were selected. Ben Ediger is presently majoring in biochemistry and mathematics. Steph Moquin is majoring in biology and anthropology.
Fall 2007 Headlines
UHP Faculty member, Dr. Troy Lovata has been invited by Santa Fe’s School for Advanced Research to give a public talk on his studies of “archeology hoaxes and prehistoric re-creations.” On February 12 th, 2008 Lovata will give a presentation entitled Southwestern Archaeology: Faking the Past. This lively talk will explore the great lengths that people have gone to re-create the past, examines why archaeological ruses sometimes work and sometimes fail, and shows that even professional archaeologists have occasionally had a hand in faking the past. The 2005-2006 Scribendi has been awarded the National Magazine Pacemaker for general excellence and outstanding achievement by a college magazine in a national competition given by the Associated Collegiate Press. The award was presented at the National College Media Convention in Washington, D.C., October 27th, 2007. Issued annually since 1927, the Pacemaker Award is considered the highest level of honor in student journalism. The staff of the 2005-2006 issue included: Madeleine Dent Coleman (Editor), Danielle Gilliam (Asst. Editor), Anna Butman, Dawn Catanach, Alyssa Christy, Dohnia Dorman, Sheena Kinsel, David Pendell, Jay Reidy, Jennifer Sawayda, and Amaris Ketcham (Office Manager).
