Manuel Lujan Jr. Student Paper Award
Recipients Announced

July 15, 2006—It's a tie! Benjamin Amiri of the University of Florida at Gainesville, and Steven A. Hatton of the University of New Mexico, will share the 2006 Manuel Lujan Jr. Student Paper Award. After careful deliberation, which based its results on the technical quality of the six qualifying student papers nominated, plus the skill with which the authors delivered them at STAIF-2006, judges found themselves declaring a dead heat. Each will be awarded a $250 check and certificate at STAIF-2007.

Amiri presented "A Stainless-Steel, Uranium-Dioxide, Potassium-Heat-Pipe-Cooled Surface Reactor System," as part of session C03: Reactor Systems Concepts for Surface Power I within the 23th Symposium on Space Nuclear Power and Propulsion. Though as the award rules stipulate, nominated students must be the lead author on their nominated paper, Amiri's paper was co-authored by Bryan T. Sims, David I. Poston, and Richard J. Kapernick, all affiliated with Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Hatton's paper, "How Small Can Fast-Spectrum Space Reactors Get?” was co-authored by ISNPS director and University of New Mexico Regents' Professor Mohamed S. El-Genk. It, too, appeared as part of the 24th Symposium, in session C10: Space Nuclear Reactor Power Systems and Concepts.

Six papers competed for this year's award, which requires that their student authors complete the bulk of the research utilized. Each paper's topic must also represent some portion of the student's masters thesis or doctoral dissertation.
