El-Genk holds three U.S. patents, two on advanced concepts for nuclear reactor power systems for bimodal and thermal propulsion and one on super-conducting thermoelectric devices. He has published more than 210-refereed papers and 260 technical papers in conference Proceedings and Transactions, and edited a book and more than fifty volumes containing more than 4000 articles on space nuclear power and propulsion. El-Genk supervised 23 masters theses and 24 doctoral dissertations since joining the University of New Mexico in 1981, following 13 years of cumulative industrial experience in various energy fields.

El-Genk is Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of American Nuclear Society (ANS), Fellow of American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), and Associate Fellow of American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He is a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society and member of the editorial board of the International Journal of Energy Conversion and Management, USA delegate on Advisory Board of the International Heat Transfer Conference. He was the 1987 recipient of ANS Distinguished Faculty Member Honor and the recipient of the AIChE Heat Transfer and Energy Conversion Division Award, 2000.

At UNM, El-Genk was named in 2001 the 46th Annual Research Lecturer, the highest honor bestowed upon a member of the faculty. He was named Regents' Professor in 1996 and, in 1984-85, was named to receive the Presidential Lectureship Award.
