Paper Sizes and Margins
Paper Specifications
Use either standard letter size 8.5 x 11 inch paper (in North America) or standard A4 210 mm x 296 mm paper. Print on one side only of good quality white paper using a laser printer with at least 300 dpi resolution. If an electronic file is sent, ISNPS will print the paper on letter size paper.
Format and Text Area
The text area covered by your writing is prescribed here and has to be followed exactly, while the margins vary depending on the stationery used. Adjust your margins accordingly. It is recommended that you test print your file using more than one computer/printer to make certain the margins print correctly. The published book will have a finished “trim” size of 8.5 x 11 inches (216 x 280 mm). On every page the printed area will measure:
6 ½ inches wide x 9 inches long,
or 165 mm wide x 228 mm long.
Margins
This means margins on the typical 8.5 x 11 inch sheet of paper will be 1 inch all the way around. It is important to follow the above specifications exactly when setting the margins. (The only exception to this rule comes on the first page of your paper, when the title should start ¾ inches below the top margin, a total of 1 ¾” from the top of the typical 8.5” x 11” size paper.) Pages in the final published book will be printed at 100% (same size as manuscript submitted). If the page content extends beyond these margins, or conversely does not come to the margins, you will need to reformat your text, figures, and equations to meet the margin requirements.
Page Numbering, Headers & Footers
AIP will insert the page numbers. Do not type page numbers on the manuscript. Do not use headers or footers. To help keep pages in order, write page numbers on the bottom right hand corner outside the text area in light blue pencil. If possible, use a non-reproducible blue pencil. Do not leave extra space in the text area for the page numbers. AIP will insert the page numbers below the last line of text. Again, in order to ensure that your paper will reproduce clearly and in consistent size and format, please make sure the page dimensions are followed exactly.
Footnotes
Do not use footnotes. (Do not use headers or footers either.)
