References
In-text Citations: When referring to literature citations within the text, the authors’ names must be used. Numbered citations are not acceptable. List the first author’s last name and year in parentheses (Brown, 2003). If the authors’ names are part of the sentence, then only the year is in parentheses, such as “Brown (2003) discovered that…” All authors must be listed up to a total of three, i.e. (Brown, Austin, and Gormley, 2004). Only when a reference has more than three authors may “et al.” be used. When citing more than one reference within a set of parentheses, separate each one with a semi-colon, i.e. (Farley and Smith, 1999; Twist, 2005).
References Sections: Set the word “REFERENCES” as a first-level heading (12 point size, bold, all caps). Set the references below that in 9 point size. (Click on image below for larger version.)
All references in the reference section should be presented in alphabetical order, numbering is not acceptable. References should also be listed in a single-space format, indenting all lines using a hanging indent after the first line of each reference. If the author has more than one publication in a given year, designate so by adding a letter next to the year in the reference section. Remember to add a matching letter to the in-text citation. For example, (Brown 2003a; 2003b). Use of “et al.” is acceptable if there are four or more authors (no period after "et" but period after "al"). If there are less than four authors, list all authors within both the text and the reference section. Be sure your reference section shows the complete information needed for finding the reference.
