The Jonson Gallery Paul Bartlett Ré

Paul Bartlett Ré
1950, Albuquerque, NM
Albuquerque artist Paul Ré will be donating his extensive collections, archives, and estate to the Jonson Gallery of the UNM Art Museum. For its part, the Gallery will care for this generous bequest as well as make the works available to the public in permanent rotating exhibitions in the renovated Jonson residence, located above the galleries. Plans have also been laid for a Paul Ré sculpture garden in the Gallery’s front lawn. In addition, a portion of the artist’s estate will be set aside as an endowment to fund the Paul Bartlett Ré Peace Prize, which will be awarded to a UNM student, faculty, or staff person who has demonstrated notable achievements in promoting world peace and understanding. The Jonson Gallery is proud to be the recipient of such a gift, and the artist honored to be closely associated with his friend Raymond Jonson, whom he deeply respects for his art, integrity, and vision.
Paul Ré earned his Bachelor of Science degree in physics from Cal Tech in 1972, but rather than turn to research or teaching he used his foundation in physics to express “the beauty of science” through art. Ré has had 22 solo exhibitions across the United States, including a body of tactile work called Touchable Art for the Blind and Sighted, which was the subject of special documentary produced by PBS affiliate SCETV in Columbia, South Carolina and his first book published in 1990. In 1993, his second book The Dance of the Pencil was published. His writings have appeared in journals such as Leonardo, Design Journal, La Mamelle, New America, and The Journal of Visual Impairment.
The artist has been the recipient of a dozen major awards honors, including The Legion of Honor from the United Cultural Convention, The Order of American Ambassadors and The Genius Laureate of the United States, The World Lifetime Award from the American Biographical Institute, and The Da Vinci Laureate and Hall of Fame from the International Biographical Centre in Cambridge, England. Despite all of these honors, he admits that his greatest reward is when people are moved by his works towards greater peace and fulfillment.
