ART ED 430/530   Studio Art in the Schools: iMovie

Course Description:   This course explores the use of iMovie as a technological teaching tool for both the elementary and secondary levels.  Students will learn digital editing through iMovie, a software program specific to Apple computers.  Students will demonstrate competence with using iMovie to create full motion movies for use as supplemental instructional tools.

Methods of Instruction:  Discussions, studio work, reflective papers, and occasional lectures.  Students who have special needs that may affect their ability to benefit from their educational experience are asked to disclose those needs to me as early as possible so I can arrange appropriate accommodations.  Please keep cell phones turned off during class.

Assignments:

Completion of iMovie of Studio Technique/Demonstration - 30 points
Students will work in pairs and each will be required to create and complete a 5-minutes or more iMovie of a specific studio technique and demonstration.  Each student will complete an iMovie of a studio technique/demonstration complete with edited clips, transitions, titles, and two tracks of audio – one of the student partner speaking about the art studio technique and one with music created in Garage Band and/or with copyright-free music.  Copyright-free music will ensure that the iMovie will not be taken off of YouTube when uploaded.  The criteria for assessing the quality of the iMovie will be determined with a rubric that will be distributed to students during the class.

Completion of iMovie of Artist Interview - 30 points
Students will create and complete a 5-minutes or more iMovie of an interview with a local (ABQ or NM) visual artist.  The iMovie must include edited clips, transitions, titles, digital still images of the artist’s work, and two tracks of audio – one of the artist speaking about her/his work and one with music created in Garage Band and/or with copyright-free music.  The criteria for assessing the quality of the iMovie will be determined with a rubric that will be distributed to students during the class.

Completion of reflective exercises- 10 points

In-class activities - 20 points (Grad students 30 points)

The student will be required to complete various activities connected to learning iMovie during the class sessions.  Therefore, class attendance is mandatory.

Completion of Assessment using Rubrics (2) - 10 points
(Graduate students will also complete two additional Rubric Assessments) - 10 points
The student will be required to assess two to four iMovies created by students in the class using a rubric provided by the course instructor.  This gives students enrolled in the course opportunities to participate in and understand how to assess their future secondary level or post-secondary level art students.
