            An important family of the south west coast of Newfoundland is that of James and Elizabeth Young. The origin of this family is currently unknown but it is likely that they came to the Burgeo area from further east, as is common for many of the early families found in this region. Again, as is usual for this sort of research, this is a work in progress.

            There seem to be two individuals named James Young flourishing at this time, one of Fortune (later of Codroy Island) and the other of the Burgeo area. Both are married to women named Elizabeth. James and Elizabeth (sometimes Betsy) Young, of Fortune had children baptised on 11 May 1835 at Codroy Island by Edward Wix as follows: William (age 12), Mariann (age 11), Thomas (age 9), Amelia (age 5), Charlotte (age 3), and Catherine (age 1). These are the same children mentioned as being baptised at Fortune: William (on 14 Aug 1823 by William Wilson), Mary Ann (on 24 Mar 1824 by George Elliage), Thomas (on 7 Apr 1826 by Simeon Noall), and Amelia (on 4 Apr 1830 by Adam Nightingale). This family is not the same one as the subject of this sketch. Our subject family is found in the environs of Burgeo.

            Please note that there are only three children in this presentation who are definitely connected by documented sources to the James and Elizabeth Young of the Burgeo area. Those children are the twins, Hannah and Charles, and Rosanna. All of the other children are individuals who appear in the records in one way or another and who are documented as living in or near Burgeo. Additionally, each of these individuals is shown to be in association with known neighbours of James and Elizabeth. These are the determining factors in placing these individuals in this family group.

            There is only one other Burgeo individual, William Young, who married Elizabeth Dicks, both of Lower Burgeo, on 18 Sep 1865, at Lower Burgeo. The reasons that this man is not included in the subject family group are 1) that the records do not show any indication of him associating directly with the family or with neighbours of the family, 2) he lived in Burgeo while the rest of the family were generally resident away from that center, and 3), there is another William Young, who is resident near the rest of the family, contemporary with the other.

            Here are the first three generations of this family as currently conceived.
