Mary Edmonia Lewis, a 19th century sculptor is the topic of a book written by Kirsten Pai Buick, an assistant professor of Art History and the associate director of African American studies at UNM. Buick will present an excerpt from the introduction when she receives the University Libraries Faculty Acknowledgement Award on Thursday, January 18, 2007, at 4 p.m. in the Willard Reading Room of Zimmerman Library.
Buick's talk titled “Writing the Woman Artist: Mary Edmonia Lewis" will explore the theme of the book, examing her work from an art history perspective, but also challenging the racialism of contemporary art history that demands that the black or native subject replicate their race in the art work. The book will be released by Duke University Press.
Univeristy Libraries sponsors the Faculty Acknowledgement Award as a way to recognize and honor members of the UNM faculty for scholarly work in their fields of specialization.
The event is free and open to the public.
