University Libraries Honor Julie Coonrod

Julie_CoonrodAssociate Professor of Civil Engineering Julie Coonrod will receive a faculty acknowledgement award from University Libraries on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Willard Room of Zimmerman Library. As part of the event Coonrod will present a short talk on “The Rio Grande, a River of Contrasts.” The Middle Rio Grande, a strip of oasis in the desert, is the subject of ecosystem restoration, water supply and flood control.

Coonrod says, “Managing this environment based on strong science and engineering is a necessity to the people of New Mexico.”

Her ongoing research projects include the Urban Flood Demonstration Program in the Middle Rio Grande, Scaling Middle Rio Grande Evapotranspiration and Open Channel Modeling for the Albuquerque Metropolitan Arroyo Flood Control Authority.

Coonrod has been a faculty member at UNM since 1997. She teachers a popular graduate course titled “GIS in Water Resources Engineering” that serves many UNM departments. Coonrod is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the American Water Resources Association. She also serves as the faculty advisor for the Society of Women Engineers.

The University Libraries Faculty Acknowledgement Award is given to members of the UNM faculty in appreciation of their contribution to the body of scholarly knowledge.

The event is free and the public is welcome.
