ACADEMICS

The interdisciplinary curriculum of the Medieval Studies degree programs at the University of New Mexico is structured on the model of core curricula, which provides a strong base of interrelated knowledge and learning that enables the student to have a broad yet deep understanding of the Medieval period in all of its aspects. Furthermore, the pursuit of a degree in Medieval studies develops the scholarly habits which will be prized for further study in any field.

In terms of the curriculum, IMS attempts to respond to student requests as much as is possible. In recent years several new courses have been offered, such as: Anglo-Saxon Prose, Medieval Bibliography, and Medieval Latin. Revised courses such as Old Norse, Medieval Aesthetics and a topics course devoted to Medieval Women were also taught in response to student requests.

IMS offers Medieval Studies programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The components of these programs include the following:

An undergraduate Minor in Medieval Studies, a multi-disciplinary course.

An M.A. in English, Medieval Studies Concentration.

An Ph. D. in English, Medieval Studies Concentration.

A Ph. D. in Medieval History.
