Modules - Peer Mentoring in the Secondary Schools

Home Academics Events

Week One

Introduction to UNM's Zimmerman Library with tour and computer catalogue instruction. Introduction to research techniques, so that student may answer the following questions:

1. How many volumes does Dictionary of the Middle Ages have?
2. What information about Geoffrey Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales is in that set?
3. Identify and locate by call number the dictionaries of medieval languages.

Week Two

Discuss techniques of summary and proper citation of sources in Dictionary of the Middle Ages.
Explore the library and brainstorm with mentor for possible paper topics.
Look at some secondary sources on top two topics and discover what kinds of things they discuss.

Week Three

Discuss proper forms to use on research paper, examining past papers as examples. Student will provide one of his/her past papers for evaluation by the mentor. Continue to search for materials on paper topic.

Week Four

By this time, student should have decided on a particular topic. Start working on getting a preliminary or working bibliography together. In addition to the primary source, the student should now have several secondary sources. Feel free to adjust time between research in the library and reviewing material at home. Prepare a bibliography sheet for next week.

Week Five

Turn in working bibliography for review with mentor. Bring at least two of the books listed on the bibliography to check for accuracy of citations. Work on bibliographic form for various types of sources. Begin thinking about a thesis sentence or specific point of view. Begin work on a five-source annotated bibliography for next week.

Week Six

Review annotated bibliography and working thesis. Begin constructing an outline for the paper, putting in as much detail as possible. Bibliographical sources should be slightly narrowed by now.

Weeks Seven and Eight

POTENTIAL SPRING BREAK FOR UNM AND APS, VARIES IN FALL

Week Nine

Review work on outline and begin writing in paragraphs to the outline. Discuss how outline becomes rough draft. Keep adapting outline to new information from research. Begin writing introductory paragraph that contains thesis.

Week Ten

Continue writing in earnest. Bring questions to meeting with mentor for discussion, and be prepared to talk about organization, argumentation, sources, and support for thesis. Keep writing - it's easier to edit down than expand later.

Week Eleven

Spend this time on research. If there were problems in rough draft, spend time on research to correct them now. Rough draft should be completed by now. Review with mentor for suggestions.

Week Twelve

Final draft due. Bring a copy for review with mentor. This allows for last minute revision before final due-date. Now is the time for checking of sources, quotations, grammar, etc.

Week Thirteen

Final draft of paper due.
