Spring Lecture Series 2005

"Medieval Journeys:
Pilgrims, Crusaders, and Explorers"

Monday, March 28 - Thursday, March 31, 2005

Woodward Hall, Room 101 and Keller Hall
on the University of New Mexico Campus

Five internationally distinguished experts delivered the seven lectures of “Medieval Journeys,” exploring the impact that cross-cultural encounters had upon individuals and society in the Middle Ages. Key topics and themes were the development of the medieval view of the world and man’s place within it; the great medieval pilgrim tours, particularly the “Camino de Santiago”; the origins of the crusading movement and the impact of the crusades on East-West relations; and new interpretations of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. As every year, the lectures were free and open to the public.

The Spring Lecture Series has for twenty years distinguished itself in the diversity of topics covered – everything from “Books and Learning in the Middle Ages” to “Medieval Russia.” Internationally renowned specialists have consistently brought new perspectives to their areas of expertise, thus creating a continuum between past and present and demonstrating that medieval studies constitute
a very contemporary discipline. This year, addressing a topic such as medieval pilgrimage practices, in view of New Mexico’s own pilgrimage tradition, demonstrates the actuality of that continuum. As in previous years, generous support, this year from as many as twenty-nine institutions within the University of New Mexico, has made it possible to offer this community-oriented series, which continues to appeal to learned and laymen alike.
