Non-Silver Lab Rules

The non-silver lab is located in the Art Annex, a 24-hour secured building. Other than the non-silver lab, the Art Annex contains only studios for graduate students in photography and painting. Only students enrolled in non-silver classes and those doing independent work under faculty supervision are permitted to use the Non-Silver facility.

You are allowed only access to the Non-Silver area and the bathrooms; do not roam the halls of the Art Annex. Do not prop exterior doors open, and be careful to ensure that no unauthorized persons enter this building.

If you are a qualified student and have paid the appropriate lab fee, you may check out the key to this facility from the monitor in room 102. The monitor will take your I.D. and loan the key. You alone are responsible for the key. Do not leave the non-silver lab while the key is issued to you; others will be unable to use the lab.

You must return the key no later than 30 minutes before closing time the same day. Keeping the key overnight will result in loss of privileges or other penalty to be decided by the instructor and the lab supervisor.

If you lose the key, the doors must be re-keyed and all graduate students issued new keys. In case of key loss, you are responsible for the expense and inconvenience and will be fined $175.00.
Lab and Chemical Safety: Non-Silver Lab

It is imperative that you know and observe safe procedures when handling and using photographic equipment and chemicals. If you become aware of a potential problem or hazard, make sure to communicate

it with staff and with others nearby who may be at risk. If you notice any spilled liquid, tell the photo monitor immediately. If a tripod, light stand, electrical device or any other equipment doesn’t seem to be working properly, inform the lab coordinator and monitor immediately so that it can be safely corrected.

Do not bring chemicals into the lab without the prior approval of the art lab supervisor. If a chemical is approved, you must supply three copies of the chemical’s MSDS. Failure to follow this procedure is a violation of Federal and State OSHA regulations. Any violation of this rule will result in total loss of privileges.
Basic photo chemicals as well as those specific to Non-Silver are kept in the lab and provided through course studio fees. As required by Federal law, MSDS forms for all chemicals used in the lab are in the monitors’ room (102), and on the wall of the non-silver lab for your review.

Safety in the Non-Silver lab is extremely important; many of the chemicals present in the lab are hazardous. You should review the MSDS information for every chemical before you use it. Faculty and TAs will review safety issues, procedures, and the use of personal protection equipment. If you wish to use a respirator you must first get medical clearance from Student Services. Make an appointment by calling 272-8043. Once medical clearance is granted, you must attend a respirator training and fitting class from Student Health and Environmental Affairs (SHEA). These classes are offered every other Friday starting January 25, 2002 at 1:00. The cost of a respirator with cartridges is about $35. If you have questions about this or anything else involving safety on campus, call SHEA at 277-2753.
Safety is everyone’s business; thank you for your cooperation.
