Vehicle Repair & Maintenance:

The Automotive Center is a full-service repair facility for UNM fleet vehicles and heavy equipment. They also maintain the CNG station. All repairs and maintenance require a valid purchase requisition (PR). To schedule service on a vehicle, contact the Automotive Center at 277-3670. Maintenance and emissions testing reminders for each unit are mailed to the assigned department contact person when service is due.

Fuel for UNM vehicles can be purchased off-campus with a Visa purchasing card, which can be obtained from the UNM Purchasing Department. Contact the Visa credit card administrator at 277-9649.

The Automotive Center maintains the University’s vehicle fleet and related equipment in a safe, dependable manner. The center is self-supporting and monitors the shop’s production through rigid tracking of technician efficiency, productivity and billable hours. This is accomplished by utilizing flagsheets, spreadsheets, and the Mitchell flat rate repair system.
With the introduction of compressed natural gas, flex fuel and electric vehicles to the fleet, it has become increasingly difficult to maintain, diagnose and repair the University’s vehicle fleet. Technician training is an important aspect in maintaining the centers competitive advantage over alternative vendors.

Vehicle Rentals:

The Automotive center also provides a full-service vehicle rental section at competitive rates. The rental fleet consists of full-size vans, minivans, sedans, and specialty-use vehicles. Vehicles are available for rental for University business, and are issued to departments, not individuals. It is recommended that reservations be made as far in advance as possible. Please have a current PR available at the time the reservation is made. Drivers of University vehicles must have a valid driver’s license, a UNM Lobo Card, and a UNM vehicles operator’s permit issued by the UNM Safety, Health, and Environmental Affairs Department. Reservation, current rates, billing procedures, and information can be obtained by contacting the reservation office at 277-1133.
