Student Organization Handbook
Please refer to the Student Organization Handbook for a guide to creating and managing student organizations
PRECHARTERING
Prechartering is an optional process for those who want to start
a group but don't have a membership established. To Precharter
you simply file a prechartering form at the Student Activities
Center in the Student Union Building, room 1018. This also allows an
organization the option of setting up a table at Welcome Back Days to
recruit new members.
CHARTERING
Chartering a student organization leads to official recognition
of the student organization by The University of New Mexico. This
allows an organization access to some facilities, equipment and,
in some cases, funding opportunities. An organization can be chartered
at any time of the year, but, organizations that charter within
the first four weeks of fall semester will be listed in the annual publication
Campus Guide to Chartered Student Organizations.
Chartering does not constitute an endorsement of an organization, its program or purposes by the University of New Mexico.
STEPS IN THE CHARTERING PROCESS
1. Attend a Chartering Workshop. The Student Activities Center
sponsors chartering workshops every year. Two officers are required
to attend the workshops. They are brief reviews of the
policies and procedures and services available to chartered groups.
Click here for the workshop schedule.
2. Fill in the UNM Chartered Student Organization form which is available at the Student Activities Center, Student Union Building, room 1018, 277-4706. A sample of the form is shown here. Return the form to the Student Activities Center, Student Union Building, room 1018. Incomplete or illegible forms will be returned to the chartering organization. Organizations must abide by the stipulations shown on the form and the Chartered Student Organization Policy.
3. One copy of a current constitution and by-laws
must be submitted with the chartering form to Student Activities.
A format is provided in the handbook and should be followed.
Your constitution or by laws should be brief and to the point
wherever possible. If your organization is affiliated with a national
organization, you must submit one copy of your local by-laws,
not the national level constitution or by laws.
