Program Description:
The University of New Mexico Amigo Scholarship for International Students entitles outstanding INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (Non-Residents) to a waiver of non-resident tuition and a cash award of $250 per semester provided a student meets renewal requirements.

In general, eligible students are those who:

  1. Are admitted to UNM by the deadline; and

  2. Have degree-seeking status; and

  3. Will be enrolled full-time; and

  4. Do not have other institutional awards.

  5. Non-immigrant visa status (F1 or J1 status and not permanent resident)

  6. Have not previously - or are not currently - attending UNM.

  7. Must have a current and complete degree application on file with International Admissions.

Undergraduates must demonstrate:

  1. The equivalent of U.S. 3.50 upper secondary average grade as determined by the Office of International Admissions and ranking in the top 20% of their graduating class; or

  2. The equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 upper secondary average grade and a combined SAT score of 1180 or higher; or

  3. A U.S. 3.5 average grade and a combined SAT score of 1070. While the SAT is not required by international students due to limited availability abroad, it is to the student’s advantage to submit SAT scores as further evidence of academic ability.

The Scholarship may be renewed annually for up to four years provided the student meets requirements of 12 credit hours and a 3.25 GPA each semester. A student who fails to meet the requirements necessary to renew the scholarship also forfeits the privilege of resident tuition.

Graduates must demonstrate:

  1. The equivalent of a U.S. Bachelor’s degree as approved by the Ministry of Education in their home country; and,

  2. The equivalent of a 3.5 undergraduate GPA as determined by the Office of International Admissions and ranking in the top 20% of their graduating class; or

  3. The equivalent of a 3.0 undergraduate GPA and a GRE score determined by the academic department to reflect competitive achievement in that department. While the GRE is not required by all departments, it is to the student’s advantage to submit GRE scores as further evidence of academic ability.

The Scholarship may be renewed annually for up to two years provided the student meets requirements of 9 credit hours and a 3.50 GPA each semester. A student who fails to meet the requirements necessary to renew the scholarship also forfeits the privilege of resident tuition.
