Student Health Center (SHC) becomes...

Student Health & Counseling (SHAC)!

To ensure that the campus community is aware that UNM students can come to the SHC for both medical and counseling services, the Student Health Center changed its name to Student Health & Counseling (SHAC), effective 5/25/08.

To all UNM students: Welcome to SHAC!

Natahnee Winder: “Student Employee of the Year”

Photo of Natahnee WinderNatahnee Winder was honored with the “Student Employee of the Year” award by the UNM Graduate Task Force-Student Engagement Committee in April 2008. Natahnee worked in the SHAC Health Education Department as the Peer Education Coordinator. She is an excellent example of a student who has made UNM her home by immersing herself into community and campus service.

One of the unique qualities about Natahnee is that she incorporates her traditional Native values while embracing Western culture. As she brings two diverse cultures together, she represents a good leader who involves many in the vision. She is not afraid to reach out to others, to get involved, or support her peers.  The SHAC family is proud of her accomplishments. Congratulations, Natahnee!

Counseling Services honored with Best Workgroup Award

Photo of CATS StaffSHAC Counseling Services received UNM’s annual “Best Workgroup” award from the Provost’s Committee for Staff in April 2008. The entire team works diligently to meet the needs of students who might otherwise drop out of school due to depression, anxiety, or other psycho-social problems. Students calling or visiting the office are welcomed by the cordial and caring reception staff. Among other services, the staff reaches out to students in crisis and is able to schedule them promptly for care. (Patient confidentiality is always assured.) We are fortunate to have a great group to offer students a welcoming, safe, and therapeutically nurturing environment. SHAC appreciates this recognition from the Provost’s Committee. For more information about Counseling Services, call 277-4537 or visit http://shac.unm.edu/counseling.html.

Allergy Skin Testing for Students

Identify the sources of your sneezing! SHAC offers allergy skin testing for UNM students! Skin testing can yield useful information about allergic sensitivities. Such information can help your health provider develop an allergy treatment plan that may include allergen avoidance, medications, or allergy shots (immunotherapy). Students can call SHAC at 277-3136 for a medical evaluation to see if they would be a candidate for testing.

Travel Health for Students, Staff & Faculty

Plan early for all of your travel needs! SHAC health practitioners and staff can help you determine which vaccines and meds are necessary for international travel, depending on individual needs, activities, and destinations. It’s recommended to plan early—at least six to eight weeks prior to your departure date, if possible. A 30-min. appt. is required for travel consultations and scheduling immunizations.
