Peer Consulting Services
Peer consultants are senior and graduate students who specialize in their field of study to coach and educate peers on fitness, nutrition, and smoking cessation topics using the Stages of Change Theoretical Model (.pdf). Note: Availability of topics can vary per semester.
Students are trained to assess individual needs and apply theory through practical experience. They serve as a link to valuable on- and off-campus resources for the UNM student population. They help students to work toward optimal health by providing one-on-one support and information on resource availability. Peers ready for change will be supported by student consultants who start with a needs assessment and offer support throughout the semester. This service is free to all UNM students.
Peer Consultants are trained by SHAC Health Education staff, SHAC medical staff and practitioners, clinicians from Counseling and Therapy Services (CATS), and by SHAC nursing staff. Students earn academic credits to serve as Peer Consultants.
Individual sessions with students and Peer Consultants are kept in strict confidence based on FERPA Guidelines.
