Peer Education Program

Please note:

  • The Peer Education Program will not be available during summer and fall 2008 semesters. Recruitment for spring 2009 Peer Educators will begin (tentatively) in October 2008. Check back here for updates.
  • Outreach & Health Presentations: If you would like to have a staff member from SHAC come talk to your student group about SHAC services (or about a specific health topic), call SHAC at 277-7947. Depending upon staff availability, we will be happy to accommodate your request.

General Information About the Peer Education Program: This program focuses on creating health awareness within the UNM community. SHAC staff and practitioners train peer health educators to offer presentations dealing with sexual health, nutrition and fitness, stress/time management, suicide prevention, substance abuse, and other health-related topics. UNM program representatives can request for 50-minute health presentations to be offered to their student groups in dorms, classrooms, and other on-campus locations. Based on the Stages of Change Theory (.pdf), peer educators provide information from a pre-contemplation stage (group focus/indirect approach) by creating health awareness among their peer population and informing them about one-on-one support. These students also have an opportunity to coordinate an event for their peer population. This is a free service for UNM students and organizations. Students earn academic credits to serve as a peer health educator.
