Academic Profile:

I have two streams in my research that often flow together: Nature and Culture.  In my environmental research, I explore how communication as a cultural force closes and opens doors to the re-examination of the human relationship with the environment.  In my research on culture, I explore ways culture and communication intersect to generate and transform perceptions and practices. Questions I am concerned with include:

•  How is environmental knowledge both constructed and transgressed?

How are cultural and ecological perceptions and actions reproduced and resisted through communication?

•  How does nature mediate communication and culture?
•  How is the self altered through culture, environment, and communication?

Please see Research for examples.

Professional Background:

Before entering academia, my former career was as a journalist. I served as a magazine and newspaper editor, reporter, editorial writer, copy editor, and current events talk show host during my 13-year career, and worked in a range of media, including daily, weekly, and monthly newspapers, monthly magazine, and NPR-affiliate radio.
