Personal Profile
Barbara Hannan
My interests gravitate
toward the metaphysical and epistemological issues that arise in the periphery
of empirical science, particularly the foundational questions of biology and
psychology: What is life? What is it to have a mind? I am also interested
in ethical issues having to do with freedom and responsibility for action.
My latest book, The Riddle of the World: A Reconsideration of Schopenhauer's Philosophy, will be published soon by Oxford University Press.
I have a law degree, and I am a member of the State Bar of New Mexico; however, I am not currently active in the practice of law.
I am a fairly accomplished amateur mezzo-soprano, and singing is the greatest joy in my life. When I am not doing philosophy, I am often rehearsing or performing with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
In general (there are exceptions)
I prefer non-human animals to people. I love parrots, and share my life with
a blue-fronted Amazon, Carla. I have a colony of box turtles living in my
back yard. I also love horses, and go horseback riding at every opportunity.
