Frog Dissection

Introduction Task Process Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Introduction

Why do we dissect frogs?  This has been a common practice in biology classes for many, many years.  A frog is a vertebrate, meaning it has a backbone or spine.  Humans are also vertebrates.  By studying the anatomy of a frog, we can learn a lot about our own anatomy.

Task

Under Resources, there is a link to Frog Net, an  interactive frog dissection lesson with video.  Complete the lesson, step-by-step and take the quiz.

Process

From the home page, click on Begin Dissection.  This starts the lesson with preparing the frog.  The images are of an actual frog and are not computer animations.  It's quite interesting.  As you go through the lesson, you may want to view some of the videos, the Tryit exercises and check out some of the additional information included under the Guess What? buttons.  Be careful.  The Guess What? information can lead you astray.

Evaluation

When you have finished the dissection and organ identification, there is a quiz written for this program.  It is not an interactive quiz and cannot be scored, so please send me an email to let me know how you did on the quiz and whether or not you liked the lesson and found it useful.

Conclusion

I hope that you enjoyed working through this lesson.  Years of work have gone into developing interactive software so that students wouldn't have to actually dissect a frog.  Don't you feel lucky?
