Office ofthe Registrar

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), also known as the Buckley Amendment, is the federal statute that governs student educational records. Everyone who works with student records should be familiar with the law's provisions governing students' rights to access their records, students' rights to amend their records, and students' rights to limit disclosure of personally identifiable information. The Office of the Registrar offers a workshop that covers these aspects of the federal law, as well as our responsibilities to protect the confidentiality of student education records. Questions regarding the application of the law in your particular area are encouraged.

As the University of New Mexico implements the Banner Student Information System all university employees requiring access to student records must complete the "Securing Private Data" module and pass the "Securing Private Data- EXAM" module through the Human Resources Learning Central website. There is a computer-based training module, Instructor-Led training and a proficiency exam. We highly recommend that you take training before taking the proficiency exam.  Please be aware that you will be required to pass the on-line proficiency exam before gaining access.

Student Private Data (Instructor-Led) training sessions are held the second Wednesday, and the fourth Tuesday of each month in the Registrar's conference room in the Student Services Center, Room 261. The second Wednesday sessions meet from 10 a.m. until 12 noon. The fourth Tuesday sessions meet from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. If you wish to attend a training session, please sign-up for a session at Learning Central.
