| Our Mission
Women Studies is an interdisciplinary program
that strives to provide equal education for both women and
men by making the study of the history and culture of women,
as well as the social structures of gender, the central focus
of concentrated scholarship and learning. The program
incorporates insights from the study of history, literature,
and the social sciences as well as law, education, the humanities,
and fine arts. The program supports the development
and application of new theories of feminist studies throughout
the university and works to create an atmosphere in which
women and their achievements can continue to take place and
receive serious attention.
The Women Studies Program upholds the highest levels of academic excellence and integrity and supports its faculty's efforts to establish and maintain rigorous scholastic standards.
Why Women Studies?
The interdisciplinary nature of the Women
Studies Program requires students to use knowledge about women
and gender from several areas to create more coherent and
developed ideas about the position of women throughout and
across societies. Such an education prepares students
for life as citizens, workers, and family members by teaching
critical thinking and encouraging students to think in new
and creative ways. Women Studies majors go into every
field, just as graduates of other liberal arts specialties
do. As a liberal arts degree, Women Studies is not a
vocational training program but a preparation for adult life.
What
can I do with a degree in Women Studies?
Programs
The Women Studies Program offers both a
major (36 credit hours)
and a minor (21 credit
hours). A student can also pursue Women Studies as a
second major (27
credit hours). In addition, certain Women Studies courses
can be applied toward the group requirements of the College
of Arts & Sciences. All Women Studies courses are
acceptable for elective credit in all colleges.

- The Women Studies Program celebrated
30 years at UNM in 2002. This makes our UNM Women Studies
Program one of the oldest in the United States. In
1969, Women Studies was a collective of faculty, graduate
students and community members. In 1971, the Women
Studies Program was established. The original collective
also contributed to the founding of the UNM Women’s Resource Center and
the Albuquerque Rape
Crisis Center. The UNM Women Studies Program is
now part of the College of Arts & Sciences. For
many years, the Women Studies Program was directly under
the Office of the Provost. Sixteen Directors have served
the WMST Program over the years. Directors have come from
within and from outside the University of New Mexico. At
least five of those directors have become department chairs--four
at the College of Arts & Sciences, one at the College
of Education. Until 1999, the UNM Woman Studies Program
offered only a minor. The program now offers a major, a second major and a minor in Women Studies. The
Women Studies Program has graduated 26 majors since the
start of the undergraduate major in 1999.Currently around
500 students, generating some 1500 credit hours, take courses
in the Women Studies Program. The UNM chapter of Iota Iota Iota ("Triota"), the honor
society of Women Studies, has formed and is in the process
of being formally recognized by the national Triota organization. In
any given semester, the Women Studies Program cross-lists
courses with other programs, colleges, and departments at
UNM. These include: African American Studies,
Native American
Studies, Asian Studies, European
Studies and the UNM
Honors Program. Departments within the College of Arts
& Sciences include American
Studies, Anthropology,
History, Philosophy, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, English, Communication & Journalism, and
the Sciences. Course are also cross-listed with the Colleges
of Education, Fine Arts, and the Anderson Schools of Management. A multidisciplinary
Executive Committee supports and advises the
Women Studies Program. Over one hundred women faculty
lend support to the Women Studies Program and are on the
Women Studies Listserv.
- The Women Studies Program is a member
of the National Women Studies
Association (NWSA), the Southwest Institute for Research
on Women (SIROW) and the New Mexico Women Studies Consortium.
