The purpose of an ONSITE internship is to get a real sense of the on-the-job training and duties in a professional career. Students exchange their time and energy to gain experience in a particular field. They can also use an internship to determine if they have a sincere interest in a particular career. Many interns find permanent, paid employment with the companies/organizations in which they interned. |
We treat ONSITE intenships just like a job. Students must go out then and get them. It is the STUDENTS responsibility to contact the internship site DIRECTOR and arrange the internship experience. This should be done well in ADVANCE of the start of semester as these spots are limited at all sites! Some approved worksites are listed on our web site. Please note, due to COVID-19 some sites have closed and others have reorganized. Please CLICK Here! for this link. |
Students MAY also arrange internship opportunities throughout the state of New Mexico (and/or in OTHER states in the U.S. and beyond). Student will be responsible for contacting the prospective site and site supervisor, seek their approval for providing the student an internship opportunity, and then get final approval from the Dr. Kravitz. |
You cannot begin your Fall and Spring internships early. Fall and Spring internships start at the beginning of the semester. HOWEVER, you can complete your agency acceptance paperwork early. NOTE: As stated above, he ONSITE Internship PEP 495 has one YOUTUBE meeting during Fall and Spring Semester (in the beginning). Summer internships may begin right after Spring Finals are complete. |
No credit may be given for previous work or volunteer experience in health/fitness settings. We do not grandfather previous work experiences for a grade at UNM. |
Students should not expect to be paid by a worksite while doing an internship, although some sites do offer compensation. It is fine if you are compensated, but most internship sites do not pay interns. |
If you have a paid job at a clinical or fitness-related facility you CAN use this position as your internship. You will follow all of the guidelines and do all of the assignments as the other students in onsite PEP495 internships. |
You can do your internships during the fall, spring and summer sessions. |
For the 3 credit hour internship, the student must log in a minimum of 180 hours per semester. For the FAll and SPRING semester this breaks down to approximately 12 hours per week at the internship site. |
During the eight week summer session, the hours logged per week will typically double (i.e., 24 hours per week for the 3 credit hour internship). |
The Exercise Science supervisor for fall, spring and summer internships is Dr. Kravitz. |
All paperwork for internship is on the web for Summer and Fall/Spring Internships |
It is the student's responsibility to notify the worksite supervisor in case of illness or emergency. |

Do I need to do any background checks for this internship?
