Professional Bio:
Virginia (Ginny) Wilmerding, PhD, danced professionally in New York City
and is now a Research Professor in the Dance Program. She also teaches
in the Exercise Science Program in the College of Education and at the
Public Academy for Performing Arts, an APS charter school. Ginny is
formerly the Chief Executive Officer for the International Association
for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS). She is a past-president of IADMS
and served on the Board of Directors from 2001-2011. Ginny was the
Associate Editor of science for the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science.
Dr. Wilmerding has published original research in the Journal of Dance Medicine
& Science, Medical Problems of Performing Artists, Medicine & Science in
Sports & Exercise, Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, and IDEA
Today. Her Research interests include body composition, biomechanics, training
methodologies, injury incidence and prevention, pedagogical considerations in
technique class, and the physiological requirements of various dance idioms.
With Donna Krasnow, PhD, she has co-authored resource papers for IADMS
and Healthy Dancer Canada and together they have co-authored two books:
Motor Learning and Control for Dance: Principles and Practices for
Performers
and Teachers, published by Human Kinetics in 2015, and Dancer
Wellness, published in 2017 and now available in Spanish. Ginny currently sits
on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at UNM and is Managing Director of
The New Mexico Ballet Company.
