Post-Doc Opportunities

-Post-Doctoral Position

-Dear BES BioScience Retreat Attendees, I enjoyed our meeting at the Airlie Conference Center last week and wanted to mention a post-doctoral position in my lab. Through generous support of DOE Basic Energy Sciences, NIH, UNM, and Sandia National Labs we are assembling a state of the art Bio-AFM system (Asylum) with additional Cyto-Viva illumination optics enabling optical imaging of sub-micron objects. We also have access to some very good novel optical microscopes combining SERS, TIRF, confocal etc.  I have a position for a post-doctoral fellow to assemble and run this bio-imaging facility. We will study cellular integration into nanostructures (see enclosed 2006 Science article) as well as nanostructure incorporation into cells. Interested candidates should send their resume to me at the following address.

-For the NIH Nanomedicine Center project on nanoconductors, The University of New Mexico effort has two basic goals First to develop self-assembled nanoporous platforms as supports for natural lipid bilayers and transmembrane proteins and second to develop nanoporous films as completely synthetic analogues of natural ion or molecular transporters/channels. To support these goals we are seeking a post-doctoral researcher with experience in one or more of the following areas: biophysical measurements of individual ion channel currents (so-called single channel recordings) using patch clamp techniques, self-assembly of hybrid organic inorganic nanostructured materials, atomic layer deposition, protein engineering, membrane formation and characterization. The Brinker research group located at the University of New Mexico/Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) Advanced Materials Lab provides an interface to SNL and the DOE Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) along with two major university research centers and the NSF National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network (NNIN). Please send a CV and description of description of research experience to cjbrink@sandia.gov

Undergrad Opportunities

The School of Engineering in a joint effort with the College of Arts & Sciences recently received notification from NSF that our proposed project, titled "NSF Scholarships in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (S-STEM)," was funded.  Starting this Spring 2007, we will be able to offer about (22) renewable scholarships of up to $5,000 (each) per academic year to students pursuing B.S. degrees in any of the following disciplines:

- Computer Science
- Engineering: Chemical, Civil, Computer, Construction, Electrical,
Mechanical, or Nuclear; and students who  have been accepted into the
pre-major engineering program intending to major in Engineering or
Computer Science
- Some science majors in the College of Arts & Sciences.

This scholarship program will be managed by the Engineering Students
Services (ESS) office under my direction, as the project's Principal
Investigator and other CoPIs collaboration: Mark Ondrias (Associate Dean
for the College of Arts & Sciences), Steve Peralta (ESS Director), and
Elsa Castillo, (ESS Student Programs Specialist).

Elsa Castillo, the Scholarship Coordinator, has already distributed
hard copies of the application package and flyer to all the
participating departments. Application information is also available at:
 http://soemep.unm.edu/scholarships.html

NOTE: This program is an expansion of  our NSF-Computer Science,
Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Program. The CSEMS
Program offers (30) additional scholarships of up to $3,000 (each) per
academic year- also renewable scholarships. For further information of
the CSEMS Program, please visit: http://www.unm.edu/~csems (11/16/06)
