First Time Freshman Admissions Guidelines
The University of New Mexico has established the following scholastic standards for student admissions. If you meet these standards, you are admissible to UNM based on your academic merit and test scores. If not, you may still potentially be considered for admission through special consideration.
Applications and credentials submitted by entering freshmen and transfer students with fewer than 26 transferable college credit hours will be examined on the basis of the following criteria:
Minimum of 2.25 average or better on a 4.00 scale for all high school courses plus completion of the following 13 specific college preparatory units (two semesters equal one unit) with at least a 2.25 average:
- 4 English, one of which must be 11th or 12th grade composition;
- 3 Math, including algebra I, algebra II, geometry, trigonometry, calculus or higher mathematics;
- 2 Social Science, one of which must be U.S. history;
- 2 Natural Science, one of which must be a laboratory science in biology, chemistry or physics; and
- 2 Foreign Language, both of which must be the same language other than English, or evidence of proficiency in a second language

Combination of class rank, 2.25 minimum GPA and test scores:

Home-School or Non-Accredited Schools
The University provides options for admission for those students (minimum age 16) who have been home-schooled or attended non-accredited high schools. All applicants must submit official ACT or SAT scores.
Students who have attended a non-accredited high school or home school may apply either under the GED option (see below) or may apply under the first criteria (see beginning freshmen admission requirements above).
Non-Traditional Curriculum Applicants
GED applicants should submit the following:
- Completed application.
- $20 non-refundable application fee.
- Official GED scores.
- Official ACT or SAT scores.
Admissions Checklist
Submit the following to the Admissions Office:
- Completed application form. The application can be completed and submitted either by hard copy or online.
- Official High School transcript(s) with Class Rank; or official GED scores.
- Official transcripts from all accredited colleges and university attended (if applicable).
- Official ACT or SAT-I scores.
- A non-refundable $20 application fee.
- Domestic students with international coursework please follow the instructions in the section titled Academic Records.
