Prestigious academic programs and a diverse student population were some of the reasons Se’mana chose UNM! Check out her story and see what advice she has for incoming students!
Why did you choose UNM?
I chose UNM because of their prestigious pharmacy program, the well diverse community and the availability of scholarships.
What activities at UNM are you involved with?
I have been an active sister of Alpha Pi Omega Sorority, Inc. since Spring 2006. I’ve served as Vice President, Social Director, Chieftess, Secretary, etc. For the past two years, I’ve been involved with Relay for Life and served as the Survivor co-chair. This summer is my third consecutive year as a Residential Advisor for the American Indian Summer Bridge (AISB) program.
What has been your most rewarding experience at UNM?
The most rewarding experience I’ve had at UNM was the opportunity to serve as a mentor, friend and RA during the AISB program. I feel that it is my responsibility as a Native student to serve as a mentor for upcoming generations. As an AISB RA I am able of having a direct influence and impact on the lives of our future leaders.
Which programs and services at UNM have you used?
I attribute much of my success to American Indian Student Services (AISS) and their special programs such as the American Indian Summer Bridge (AISB) program. AISS and staff do an excellent job with encouraging students and helping them succeed as a student and individual. In addition, the University Honors program has helped enhance my college career by providing an array of seminars that you can’t find in the regular university curriculum.
What advice do you have for other students?
It is very important to choose a college that compliments your lifestyle, values, goals and personality. Look very closely at the university’s mission, curriculum and student services. If you feel like the university has potential to help you succeed as a student and enhance your life as an individual, you may just want to give it a chance. Good luck in your future endeavors!
