Listed below are the community and outreach programs of the School of Engineering.

WERC Initiatives
SOE faculty and students, with support from the WERC, A Consortium for Environmental Engineering & Technology Development, are investigating technologies for food safety and degradation of heavy metals throughout the state of New Mexico.

APS Initiatives
SOE staff participate in the planning and development activities of the Rio Grande Cluster Program that is designed to enhance education programs in Albuquerque's South Valley. They also advise and assist APS staff in the programs of the Valley Academy, the academic magnet program at Valley High School.

Construction Industry Programs
SOE faculty are partnering with the Associated General Contractors of New Mexico and other construction affiliated groups to develop education and training programs for professionals in the construction industry through the Construction Advancement Institute.

Transportation Programs
The Alliance for Transportation Research Institute (ATRI) works with non-profit and community based organizations in New Mexico to address transportation concerns including public transportation and US/Mexico transportation issues.

NM MESA
SOE faculty and staff work closely with New Mexico Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement, a program that encourages middle and high school students to pursue studies in math, engineering and science.

Education Partnerships
SOE faculty, students and staff are actively engaged in joint programs with the Southwest Indian Polytechnic Institute, Albuquerque TVI and New Mexico Highlands University to enhance retention in science and engineering programs. Activities include individual mentoring, financial support, and enhanced transfer opportunities. Through the PURSUE program, faculty and students work with their counterparts at SIPI, TVI, and NMHU to develop new science course and laboratory programs. (See also College of Arts & Sciences - Physics and Astronomy)

Mentoring
SOE faculty and staff participate as mentors in the New Mexico Supercomputing Challenge for high school students, as well as mentors and judges in the New Mexico Science Fair program, both at the regional and state levels.

Tutoring
SOE undergraduate students tutor students at Valley High School, Rio Grande High School and Harrison Middle School on a regular basis.

State Fair
The Mechanical Engineering Department and the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department have exhibits and provide demonstrations for the public attending UNM Day at the New Mexico State Fair.

Civil Engineering
The School of Engineering's Department of Civil engineering recently assisted the City of Rio Rancho, NM in the design of a park and its associated infrastructure. The students in CE499L, Design of Engineering Systems, assisted the City as part of their capstone design course experience. Rio Rancho received a New Mexico Recreation and Parks Association Facility Design Award for projects under $1 million for the park design.

Regional Science Fair
The School of Engineering is a Galaxy sponsor of the New Mexico regional Science Fair which is held every year during Spring Break. Besides monetary support, SOE faculty and students serve as judges for the event. The School also provides a scholarship to the student who places first in the math and science area.

Engineering Student Programs

Expanding Horizons - The Women in Science and Engineering program, in partnership with the New Mexico Network of Women in Science and Technology, coordinates a special program for Middle School age girls to introduce them to math, engineering, science and computer science opportunities.

Junior Engineering Technical Society (JETS) - SOE hosts a national team competition each year. High School students participate in teams on a test of mathematics, science, and applied engineering problems.
