Part of the Solution - The School of Engineering

The School of Engineering does work with various entities throughout UNM to lower energy costs. One example is Mechanical Engineering Professor Andrea Mammoli, who collaborates with the UNM Physical Plant Department and the New Mexico Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. Professor Mammoli and his team have refurbished the energy system at the mechanical engineering building with a new solar array of state-of-the-art vacuum tube collectors. The system is designed so that students can use it for real life demonstrations of computer-generated energy consumption models and programs. Prof. Mammoli is also working with the U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Electricity to develop a smart grid for UNM. Recently, the Department of Energy and the U.S. Department of Energy GridWise Architecture Council gave the team an award recognizing their project and vision in smart grid implementation.
