Established in 1978

The Center for English Language and American Culture (CELAC) at the University of New Mexico is an intensive English program designed for international students and/or professionals who wish to develop college-level skills in listening, reading, writing, grammar and speaking in order to prepare for US academic studies or for work purposes. CELAC does not offer beginning or basic level classes in English as a Second Language. Applicants must be at least eighteen years old and have a high school diploma with a minimum GPA of 2.0.

CELAC students can easily transition into University studies at UNM upon successfully completing CELAC classes and receiving a passing score on the institutional TOEFL exam given in our program. Assistance with the application process is available at CELAC.

“CELAC is a great place to develop our English skills. The classes and teachers gave us a lot of opportunities to learn English and different countries’ cultures.”
   - Hide Akai, Japan

“In my experience, the CELAC program is different than others. The classes are small so the teachers can pay more attention to each student. The teachers are nice and very helpful. If international students really want to improve their English, and follow the schedule, they should try CELAC. It’s the #1 choice!”
