
The University of New Mexico is located in Albuquerque, a city of approximately
800,000 people in the sunny Southwest. The
city was founded by the Spanish conquistadores in 1706, and it reflects a
colorful blend of American Indian, Spanish, Mexican, and American life-styles.
There are a wide variety of attractions in restaurants, theaters, museums,
shopping centers, and sports activities typical of a medium-sized city. The
nearby mountains and forest lands are a great attraction to visitors who
enjoy skiing, hiking, and nature study. Students may easily travel to Mexico,
the country which borders the state of New Mexico to the south.
The economy of New Mexico is largely supported by scientific laboratories,
small-scale agriculture, mining, and tourism. The international airport is
a 10 minute drive from the University.
The capital of New Mexico, Santa Fe, is the oldest state capital in the
U.S.A., founded in 1609. This world famous city is well know as a center
for arts and crafts, the home of the renowned Santa Fe Opera and is an easy
one hour drive by car from Albuquerque.
The climate of Albuquerque is typical of high desert regions. At an altitude
of more than 1,500 meters above sea level, nights are cool and days are warm.
Summer temperatures reach 35 degrees centigrade in the hottest weather. Winter
temperatures may dip below zero degrees centigrade on some days. In general,
summers and winters are mild and very dry, compared to most of the U.S.A.
The University of New Mexico has a student population of 26,000. Although
most undergraduates come from the Albuquerque area, there are many students
from other states and foreign countries. The University offers degrees in
a wide variety of fields in the arts, sciences, technology, and the professions.
It is the major university in the state of New Mexico, and an educational
center for the Southwestern United States
