
CELAC classes meet Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. During this time, you will have 4 different classes with up to four different teachers. Your class level will depend on the result of your English placement test that you take at the start of your first semester. The class levels offered are: Low-Intermediate, Intermediate, High-Intermediate, Advanced, and Academic Bridge. Below is a list of the various courses offered.
Conversation and Listening
Provides practice in speaking and develops the ability to understand spoken
English.The intermediate level classes focus on skills necessary in everyday
life while the advanced courses prepare students for academic classes at
the University.
Reading and Vocabulary
Develops the ability to read a wide range of materials, from newspapers and American
literature to academic texts. Students master the vocabulary necessary for
good reading.
Writing
The ability to write well is very important for success in a U.S university.
This course provides the instruction and practice necessary to develop good
writing skills in a variety of essay styles.
Grammar
This course provides English grammar instruction adjusted to the appropriate
level of student proficiency.
Academic Bridge
Courses at the Academic Bridge level are designed for current or future graduate and undergraduate students whose English proficiency has progressed to a level allowing them to take a combination of some CELAC English classes and some University academic classes for credit.
These classes further develop skills in academic reading, writing, and class discussions/presentations to aid students in making the transition to University academic classes.
TOEFL Preparation Course
This course is taught by CELAC instructors with experience preparing college students for standardized English exams.
It is designed to help students meet three goals:
CELAC students come from many different countries and cultures. A cultural comparative approach, including discussions and information concerning American values and lifestyles, is integrated into each of the classes listed above. Courses are taught through a communicative method which emphasizes active language use to develop each of the academic skills.
