UNM Receives ENLACE Planning Grant

The W. K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded an ENLACE (Engaging Latino Communities for Education) planning grant to UNM. Partnered with nine other organizations, UNM will receive $97,100 for the year 2000 and the opportunity to apply for a $2 million award in 2001. The grant will enable the partnered organizations to improve higher education opportunities for Hispanic youth. UNM's partners are Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque-TVI, Catholic Social Services, City of Albuquerque, the Hispanic Round Table, Hispano Chamber of Commerce, New Mexico MESA, Public Service Company of New Mexico and Sandia National Labs.

According to a press release, ENLACE is derived from the Spanish word enlazar, meaning to link or to weave together. Its three components are a common vision of a brighter future for Latino youth, collaborative work in coalitions, and a focus on strengthening public school-university-community partnerships.
