The W. K. Kellogg Foundation has awarded an ENLACE (Engaging Latino Communities for Education) planning grant to UNM. Partnered with nine other organizations, UNM will receive $97,100 for the year 2000 and the opportunity to apply for a $2 million award in 2001. The grant will enable the partnered organizations to improve higher education opportunities for Hispanic youth. UNM's partners are Albuquerque Public Schools, Albuquerque-TVI, Catholic Social Services, City of Albuquerque, the Hispanic Round Table, Hispano Chamber of Commerce, New Mexico MESA, Public Service Company of New Mexico and Sandia National Labs. According to a press release, ENLACE is derived from the Spanish word enlazar, meaning to link or to weave together. Its three components are a common vision of a brighter future for Latino youth, collaborative work in coalitions, and a focus on strengthening public school-university-community partnerships. UNM
